Getting Ready For GRAND-AM Indy and The Glen – Laps For Life Around The Corner

June 6th, 2012 by Jack Higginbotham

The calendar on my wall tells me that June and July are busy, but living it is always more poignant than one expects. Recently Judy and I visited Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Watkins Glen in preparation of our next two Grand-Am/InTune/Guitar Center events. We are confident that we will build on the successful events held at Daytona…even more so now that we’ve met the Guitar Center teams in Indy and Syracuse as well as track management. Both events are combined Grand-Am and NASCAR weekends so we expect large and enthusiastic crowds!

Auditions will be on July 14 in Indianapolis Guitar Center and on July 21 at Syracuse Guitar Center. The respective winners will hit the stage with Davy Knowles and The Rocky Mountain Stoneflies on July 27 at Indy and August 10th at the Glen.

Last weekend, the new Grand-Am Corvette DP cars again showed their impact with Action Express taking 1-2 in Detroit. First place went to Joao Barbosa, JC France and Darren Law. We ran into David Donahue in NY at an unveil reception for the new Porsche Boxster and were able to congratulate him in person on his 2nd place. In addition to being a wonderful driver, David is a great guy and it’s only a matter of time that we will get to hand over a PRS SE trophy guitar to him and his co-driver Terry Borcheller. Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas claimed third in an action packed and close race. If you miss the race on SPEED, go to www.grand-am.com and check out Grand-Am TV…it’s awesome!

Moving on, our charity racing event for Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, LAPS FOR LIFE, (www.lapsforlife.com) will be held on June 16th at Summit Point Raceway in WV. We have 14 drivers at this point participating and raising funds for the charity…an all time high! Phil’s Tires and itROX racing are returning as sponsors and are being joined by Clark and Linda at APEX Performance….thank you sponsors!!

We hold this event at the annual Hyperfest event that our friend and director of NASA Mid-Atlantic, Chris Cobetto puts on each year. Hyperfest is an amusement park of all things automotive…everything from road racing to time trials to drifting…and Chris gets the crowd involved with silly games, live music and interesting competitions. The man knows how to throw a party so come visit us if you make the event…the paddock is “open” and we will be running a new (as in not quite built yet, certainly not tested yet) car. Come on by…we may need help!

Whether it’s Indy, the Glen or Summit Point, we hope to run into you at track soon for great music and racing!

About PRS Racing

PRS Guitars is partnering with GRAND-AM Road Racing for the fourth straight year in 2013. For the third year in a row, PRS is providing winners in both the Rolex Sports Car Series Daytona Prototype (DP) and Grand Touring (GT) classes with a unique trophy—a fully functional PRS SE Singlecut electric guitar customized with GRAND-AM and Rolex Sports Car Series logos.

This year, we are hosting pre-race Fan Days at area Guitar Centers, featuring In Tune’s Race to the Stage auditions for local high-school age guitar players. Our buddies at Drum Workshop will be joining us on the Fan Days and will be auditioning local high-school age drummers. These audition winners get the opportunity to play on-stage at one our three big racetrack concerts. In addition to Fan Days and GRAND-AM Road Racing Concerts, we will also be pumping up the excitement for Grass Roots Motorsports by hosting race-day concerts and awarding special electric guitar trophies at the Mitty and the UTTC (see schedule for details).

“We are very excited to partner with GRAND-AM Road Racing for a fourth season. We are honored to have the opportunity to work with such a fantastic group dedicated to bringing quality entertainment to the fans.” said Jack Higginbotham, President, PRS Guitars. “Our 2013 plan is to continue to provide more exciting opportunities to align our worlds, allowing more interaction with fans of racing and music.”

Paul Reed Smith Guitars is a leading manufacturer of high quality instruments in Stevensville, Maryland and has provided some of the world’s most renowned musicians with instruments since 1985. PRS Guitars has worked in the world of motorsports in various ways since 2003 when the company sponsored its first Corvette C6.R racing team. In 2007, the PRS Laps for Life charity fundraiser began at Hyperfest, supporting the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Throughout the years PRS has also created several customized race themed guitars and provided fully-functional guitar trophies for the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 (2005-2009) and GRAND-AM Road Racing’s Rolex Series (2010-present). Carlos Santana, Linkin Park, Orianthi, Opeth, Tim Mahoney of 311, Mark Tremonti of Creed and Alter Bridge, Ricky Skaggs, Cody Kilby, Martin Simpson, Tony McManus, and Warren Haynes are among the artists currently playing PRS instruments and/or amplifiers.
